Abstract Art

About P'anne Ally. . .

Phyllis (phyllis anne or p'anne ally), emanates from a creative family in the midwest. After studying fine art in college, she traveled solo around the United States in a Volkswagen conver-tible, studying art, drama & psychology in 3 universities. She earned a master's degree in counseling from Santa Clara University in California.

After living on both coasts, she left the art world & raised 2 children. Following licensing, she become a marriage & family counselor. Then, while traveling the world teaching, conferenc-ing, & presenting, she would peel away to visit art museums, galleries and studios. In 2004, she rented her own art studio. Now, a full time artist & therapist, she works & shows art in the Bay Area & throughout the US. Her evolving style, influenced by life story & nature, is primarily abstract & abstract expressionist.

Artist Statement

I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t making art. My fondest memories are of drawing & painting with my hearing impaired artist grandmother. Growing up, I loved movies & theater. Studying drama & art in college, I identified with the behind-the-scenes action & grunge of theater. I am still moved by the story & drama of people’s lives, the narrative & the felt etching of memory. My work envelops the good, the bad & the ugly of the unfolding mysteries of the lived in world. Life experience connects to a collective unconscious that guides my hand & heart in what flows onto the canvas through a miracle of dreamlike directives. My life has been the flipping back & forth between utter chaos & deep, restful, spiritual peace, the polarity of which is evident in my artwork.

The visual narrative of my work, winds its way in, surprising me & the viewer. During the creative process, when I let go, I enter a trance-like state, & my best work emerges. It’s a triumph when the painting seems to paint itself revealing an unconscious mystery, then deeper secrets emanating from the unconscious in me & transformed in the reflected experience of the viewer.

I often begin with a fleeting image, an idea or remnants of a dream. Releasing ego, perfectionism & fear of exposure, I enter the arena. The process feels mysterious, vulnerable, & even sacred. In the arena, the work begins. Life unfolding, a contrast of chaos & order,  weaves itself into the heart of my work. At best, the resulting images act as a Rorschach creating internal conversations between viewer & image, igniting the viewer’s unconscious, revealing whatever dormant mysteries lie waiting to be awakened. I like the quotation:

"While creating, artists are literally out of their minds'
