Abstract Art

About Phyllis Anne . . .

Phyllis (phyllis anne or p'anne ally), emanates from a creative family in the midwest. After studying fine arts in college, she traveled around the United States in a Volkswsagen convertible, studying art, drama & Psychology in three universities. She earned a master's degree in counseling from Santa Clara University in California.

After living on both coasts, she left the art world to raise two children and become a marriage counselor. That led her to travel the world teaching and counseling, all the while visiting art museums, galleries and studios worldwide. In 2004, she began an art practice again. She continued studies with established artists. Now, a full time artist and therapist, her work can be emotionally evocative, playful, or wickedly humorous. Her work fits in the categories of Symbolism and Abstract Expressionism.

Artist Statement

I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t making art. Among the fondest of memories, my artist identity was formed as a child, drawing and painting alongside my hearing impaired artist grandmother. I loved movies and theater; studying drama and art, I identified with behind-the-scenes action and grunge of theater. Today, I am still moved by the story and drama of people’s lives, the narrative and the felt etching of memory. The good, the bad, the ugly, unfolding mysteries of the lived in world. Life experience connects to a collective unconscious that guides my hand and heart in what flows onto the canvas through a miracle of frequent dreamlike directives. My life has been the flipping back and forth between utter chaos and deep, restful, spiritual peace, the polarity of which is evident in my artwork.

The visual narrative of my work, winds its way in, surprising me and the viewer. When I let go, I enter a trance-like state, and my best work emerges. It’s a triumph when the painting seems to paint itself revealing an unconscious mystery, then deeper secrets emanating from the unconscious in me and transformed in the reflected experience of the viewer.

I often begin with a fleeting image, an idea or remnants of a dream. Releasing ego, perfectionism and fear of exposure, I enter the arena. The process feels mysterious, vulnerable, and even sacred. In the arena; the work begins. Life unfolding, a contrast of chaos and order,  weaves itself into the heart of my work. At best, the resulting images act as a Rorschach creating internal conversations between viewer and image, igniting the viewer’s unconscious, revealing what-ever dormant mysteries lie waiting to be awakened. I like the quotation:

"While creating, artists are literally out of their minds"
